Madeira

The subtropical Madeira climate

The climate in Madeira is subtropical.
A warm summer and a mild winter are typical for the island.
It seldom happens that the weather and temperature can be called too warm or too cold.
Most of the rain will fall in between the months October and March.

The weather difference between North and South Madeira.
The North and the South of Madeira have a very different weather.
Most of the rain falls on the North side of the high mountain tops that are located in the center of the island.
While Funchal can enjoy a lot of sunshine during the summer, Madeira Interior can also during this season be packed with clouds.

Locals say that Madeira Island is the only place where you can have 4 seasons in a day.
And it's true !
Once we made a tour from Funchal, over Ponta do Pargo towards Porto Moniz. We experienced differences in temperature from 26 degrees in Funchal and 28 degrees in Ponta do Sol (the warmest place on the island), to as low as 16 degrees in Achada da Cruz and finally a nice 20 degrees in Porto Moniz.
Sunhine, rain, mist and strong winds were all part of the weather during that tour.
Sometimes it takes only a few kilometers to experience these differences in weather. On one of our holidays we had an awful weather in Santo da Serra with strong winds and heavy rain, but only 12 km away, in Camacha, it was tropical warm with plenty of sunshine.
